The Little Lamp of Shalom In a small village near the hills lived a young Jewish boy named Yonah. Yonah loved listening to stories from his grandfather, Saba Eli, especially on Friday evenings before Shabbat began. Every Friday afternoon, the village slowly became quiet. Mothers baked warm Challah, fathers returned home early, and families prepared to welcome Shabbat with peace and joy. One day, Saba Eli gave Yonah a tiny oil lamp. “Take care of this lamp,” Saba said. “It reminds us to bring light wherever we go.” Yonah looked at the lamp curiously. “But Saba, it’s so small. How can it bring light?” Saba smiled. “Even the smallest light can chase away darkness.” The Storm That evening, dark clouds rolled over the village. A strong wind blew and suddenly the electricity went out everywhere. The village became dark. Children were scared. The bakery stopped working. People could not see the path to the synagogue. Yonah remembered his little lamp. He carefully filled it with oil, lit the wick, and stepped outside. The warm glow spread around him. Soon his friend Miriam saw the light and followed him. Then another neighbor came. One by one, villagers gathered behind Yonah’s small lamp. Together they walked safely to the synagogue to welcome Shabbat. Inside, everyone sang and prayed with joyful voices. A Lesson of Light After the prayers, the rabbi placed his hand on Yonah’s shoulder. “You showed us something important tonight,” he said. “Your little lamp brought the whole community together.” Saba Eli winked proudly. Yonah smiled and finally understood. It wasn’t the lamp that made the light. It was kindness, courage, and helping others that made it shine. And from that day on, whenever someone in the village felt lost or sad, they would say: “Find Yonah’s light.”
